Final Essay

I have learned an exponential amount in the broadcast industry this year. Going in, I was not really sure what to expect. But I have spent the fall and spring semesters learning the ins and outs, so to speak. Three things that I have learned about involve talking on the radio, filming various events, and behind-the-scene movement on an actual television show. Since august, I have been introduced to these different areas in broadcasting, which will hopefully shape me during the rest of my time in college.
Maybe it does not sound like much to the average outsider, but I could have never imagined doing a sports podcast show this year that gets streamed on the internet. John, Justin, and I would work in unison for a handful of shows, and gained valuable experience in the process. We all figured out how to work with each other, and develop chemistry amongst ourselves. This is crucial for any radio duo or trio. When it first started, I was extremely nervous, and was not quite comfortable with all the things that were being thrown at me. But as time went on, I got to be less nervous, articulate exactly what I wanted to say, and help segway to different parts of the show.
Another thing I could not have envisioned doing was filming a myriad of sporting events, and even student actors on a set. This year alone I got to shoot volleyball, soccer, basketball, and baseball. This was a lot of fun to do, especially since some of my footage was put into the sports show. Also, towards the end of the second semester, I filmed an acting class doing a few scenes for their project. I worked on a stationary camera, and a hand-held camera that followed them around everywhere. As the months have passed, I have gotten to develop my camera skills and become quite savvy using it.
The other thing that has greatly helped me is working for the Moc Sports Show. With it, I have learned to be a good behind-the-scenes helper; there is always something to do. For example, I worked on the audio board, moving the script on the prompter, being the camera guy, and observing everything happening at once. I even got a brief run through by Bivens, showing me some of the cables that are used (XLR'S?). With the intro to broadcast class, I will be able to further broaden my horizon regarding work behind the camera. I will not only be able to work the audio board, but know how to plug in the microphones that connect to it. I am almost at that point already.
So, as this year winds down, I cannot help but become reminiscent of all of the broadcasting stuff that I have done this year. I have gotten to talk on radio, be a camera man, and help in anyway I can to make a show work. It has been a fun year, I have gained valuable experience, and I cannot wait to add to my communication repertoire next fall semester.

33.5 hours

4/14: I worked a total of 2 hours today. The first hour was during the Moc sports show. I worked as the prompter guy for a little. I also listened intently to John's interview questions to Pete Meyer because he's a very important man. The second hour, I stuck around and watched Jordan edit. She was showing me a few tips on final cut. She was going through all the little clips and naming them. From there she would put them in order, and eventually finish her package on baseball.

31.5 hours

4/12: I worked 3.5 hours with dakota to help film her acting project. This time, it was more hands on. They filmed scenes with multiple camera angles, so i got to station my own camera. I got to film parts from the tripod, and i got to take it off the tripod and do it by hand. I got good experience capturing. We filmed in this kids house and in walmart again. I had fun.

28 hrs

4/11: I worked 2 total hours today with Dakota. This task was something I've yet to really experience in practicum. Dakota and 2 other fellow acting students went to a walmart to film scenes in their 20 minute skit. I was Dakota's assistant and watched how she filmed the acting. I was watching techniques she used on how to keep a steady hand without a tripod. Afterwards, we went back, and I watched her work on final cut. It's starting to look more and more familiar. 2 hours.

26 hours

3/29: I had another podcast episode with justin and john. This one was a lot of fun. John said he wanted to keep it to thirty minutes because he was busy, but that's an impossible task for us. One hour later, we almost ran out of tape time. So this was 1 hour

3/30: I helped work on the moc sports show today with the usual crew, for 1.5 hours. This day i was primarily in charge of the audioboard again. I am almost to the point where i can set it up without any help; it's fun. I also watched john intently to see what interview questions he had. I learn a lot from him. My new total is 26 hours.
