mid term paper

During this semester of news media practicum, I have learned quite a bit. In general, it was a continuation on what I learned last semester. Nevertheless, I am gaining experience. The three biggest areas I have focused on are working for the sports show, doing the sports podcast, and filming the various sporting events across campus. Needless to say, I am quite involved with athletics. This will play in hand with me becoming a sports broadcaster/anchor one day.
I have been able to help operate the Moc Sport Show quite effectively thus far. There is always something to work on in there. The first thing I have worked on was the audio board. It is very important because it controls the volume of everything. Another job is working the cameras on set. There are two of them, and the people manning them need to be precise in filming the anchor. There is also a director, whom I have only gotten to observe at this point. They direct everyone with what they should be doing, and switch between the one and two camera shots. I would like to try scriptwriting one day, too. There are plenty of areas to try and master during the shows.
John, Justin, and I have only done a few episodes of Moc Sports Talk this semester, but I have improved from them. I get to work on being less nervous during a recording and really polish how I want to sound. I also get to figure out how talk cooperatively with two other people. As the shows go on, I interrupt less and talk in turn more (at least I hope). Having my own sports radio show is a dream of mine, and the podcast is certainly very helpfully in preparing me for that future.
I have gotten the chance to film a bunch of sporting events this semester. The winter sports are continuing on, and the spring sports also got going as well. So I have gotten to get practice capturing some familiar sports, and some new sports too. For example, I got to film basketball for the first time, which is much easier than volleyball. I watch a lot of basketball on TV, too, so it is sort of natural for me. I also helped film a baseball game. Those are REALLY easy considering we only have one camera shot and the action is usually focused on home plate. But the experience I have gotten behind camera has been very valuable, and it will only make me better down the road.
This semester of practicum has been very helpful. I have been engulfed in sports, which is exactly what I want. Between filming the sports show, talking on the podcast, and filming live sporting events, I have gotten quite comfortable with various parts of the media industry. I am looking forward to the next semester, to hopefully further continue this streak of hands-on learning.

18 hours!

2/19: Saturday i worked the mens basetball game for 2 hours, bringing up my total to 16. I worked behind the camera and got to film 15 minutes worth. I am getting pretty camera savvy. I took notes as well to help the editing process.

2/22: I earned 1 hour helping with the moc sports show. I watched Jeanine direct and watch her change the camera shots. Then i watched john anchor up close and learned how he does it. Then i watched Jeanine edit the show for an hour, helping me get further acquainted with final cut. So, i am at 18 hours.

2/14: I watched John try to edit the podcast today. im getting a little more familiar with final cut. hopefully i can learn from it one day. Hopefully me and justin will eventually be able to edit our podcasts and put them up on the website. I did this for 1 hour.

2/16: I did the podcast for 1 hour today. we had our first caller in from boston, the guy was knowledgeable, and i could learn from what he was saying. I further got experience behind the mic as well. Then i worked on editing it for another hour and got even more familiar with final cut. i cant wait to edit my own stuff soon. my new total is 14

11 hours

2/10: I worked 0.5 hours finishing up the Moc Sport Show. I arrived late so i wasnt assigned any specific duty. However i got to watch whoever i wanted. i ended up watching the director, Dakota, play with the one and two shots. It was interesting observing her.

2/11: First, i worked 0.5 hours for Meghan's talk show doing the soundboard. This was during practicum. I got to make voices louder or softer when necessary, and i've worked on it before, so i was basically a pro. Then, Luti showed me and Justin how to edit the podcast for 0.5 hours. He ran us through how to capture, and begin to piece some parts together. Then we went to the baseball game and filmed it/took notes for 2 hours. Its a lot easier filming baseball, the camera doesnt have to move very much; it makes life much easier.

These 2 days added up to 3.5 more hours.

7.5 hours

2/8: today i worked 1.5 hours on the sports show. I was the camera guy and further learned how to further film the anchor. I am getting good at focusing in. I also help direct, sort of. John said some wrong stuff on his first take that I identified. He did a second take.

2/9: I worked on the podcast for the first time this semester. It was 1 hour. We are getting pretty good at bantering back and forth. It is one of my dreams to maybe be a radio guy one day, so this is definitely getting me some needed experience.

New Era: 5 hours already

1/26: I worked 1.5 hours at the moc sports show. i showed up early to help set up. it was cool because i got to see some of the prep work that happens, hooking up the cameras, etc. Then the show happened and i was the camera man. That was fun, and i was getting decent at centering the faces in my camera.

After that, I helped film and take notes for the girls AND boys basketball game. This accumulated to 3.5 hours. I was there with Jordan, Justin, Shelby. This was the first time i got to film a basketball game. It was pretty neat, and it was much easier to do for me than volleyball. This being so because i watch basketball all the time. Nevertheless, it was fun.
